The "first" little black dress is credited to Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and appeared in the May 1926 issue of American Vogue--and has become a crucial element of the fashion world.
Immortalized in 1961 by Audrey Hepburn playing the role of Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's, the world has experienced the adaptation and transformation of a classic item throughout the last several decades.
As a borderline obsessive Audrey Hepburn fan, I have had this image of her as Holly in my room for years now. My Dad gives me an Audrey Hepburn calendar every Christmas. I've seen every one of her movies. I own multiple biographies and coffee table books. But throughout my fandom, nothing has been quite as striking as this "little black dress."
My fascination with Hepburn's influence on fashion gave me the perfect foundation for the research of the history of the Little Black Dress and it's influence on women's fashion throughout history.
